Alright, I havent played 1E so this comes from a place of starting with 5e dnd and trying to explain archetypes in a vacuum. Fundamentally 2e is made around being balanced while providing mechanical support to a variety of concepts, which i think it achieves well, part of it is achieved through a solid class "skeleton" and part of it is done through taking choices to highlight the parts you like.

For healing, considering you would almost always use 2 action version, it's totally not worth it. For damage, as you pointed out, it brings average from 4.5 to 5.5, which is actually a 22% increase and could be good in an Undead-heavy campaign. It's good for it's level but not like important.
